The emission of greenhouse gases from electricity generation is a major driver of global climate change. A range of internationally agreed initiatives are tackling this. One of them is Renewable Energy Certificates or RECs.
Here’s how our Certified product works:
As of July 2024, 191 businesses across the country have taken part – accounting for 2,030 GWh of electricity and more than $1 million in funding for community decarbonisation projects.
Report your market-based Scope 2 electricity emissions as zero in accordance with the GHG Protocol’s Scope 2 Guidance.
All net proceeds from our Certified programme are channelled into the Decarbonisation Fund. This fund supports electrification projects, including those driven by grassroots community organisations, enhancing your company's impact on environmental sustainability.
Receive an annual Certified Impact and Transparency Report detailing the community projects funded through our partnership. You'll also receive a Certified customer marketing toolkit to clearly show your commitment and impact to your stakeholders.
Gain the right to use the Certified Renewable Energy mark, showing your brand's commitment to supporting renewable energy generation in customer interactions and corporate reporting.
Purchase a credible, cost-effective alternative to offsets to meet your renewable energy reporting goals.
Certified stands out from other Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) products by actively contributing to reducing or preventing emissions through investments in electrification projects funded by the Decarbonisation Fund.
This approach ensures 'additionality,' meaning it creates extra benefits that wouldn't have occurred without it. In addition to allowing companies to report lower market-based Scope 2 emissions (in accordance with the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance), the Certified product channels 100% of its net proceeds into local projects that reduce or prevent carbon emissions, thereby making a real impact.
This isn't just about funding - it's about empowering. We know that decarbonising Aotearoa will take collective effort and that prioritising decarbonisation is hard for many community groups. While they'd love to invest more in reducing carbon emissions, they need to prioritise their limited funding towards the important work they do. The Community Decarbonisation Fund is designed to help them on their sustainable journey.
For eligible businesses, it’s about using the net proceeds from their RECs to fund eligible electrification projects within their own business.
The Community Decarbonisation Fund, supported by the Certified Renewable Energy product, invests 100% of the net proceeds from the Certified product into grassroots community projects.
These projects aim to reduce carbon emissions and provide tangible positive impacts in the communities they serve. Eligible projects must meet requirements around carbon reduction targets, timing, feasibility and social benefits to the community.
Thanks to our Certified customers, we’ve been able to invest more than $1 million through the fund to make a real impact for many community groups. From installing solar panels to funding electric vehicles (EVs) – we’re able to make a tangible difference for these groups.
Each year, an annual Certified Impact and Transparency Report is published to update Certified customers on the contributions and impacts of the funded community projects.
We love working with like-minded companies through Certified, because reducing New Zealand's carbon emissions is a real challenge and together, we’re stronger. But don’t just take our word for it – check out some of the projects we've funded through the Community Decarbonisation Fund.
